Children & School Services
Nurses provide basic care and case management at all New Hanover County schools. Please call your child’s school for your school nurse’s contact information or with questions regarding your child’s medical needs while attending school.
Reach out to your child’s School Nurse for help managing:
- chronic health conditions
- new diagnoses
- daily medications
- injuries
- and any other health concerns
Mental health services by referral are available at select schools for moderate to severe behavioral and emotional problems.

Our Mobile Dental Unit offers services including oral exams, cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments, X-rays, fillings and extractions to children ages 3 to 18 without accessible or established dental care or insurance.
WIC is a supplemental nutritional program for women, infants and children up to 5 years of age who meet health and socio-economic eligibility requirements. WIC provides healthy food including milk, eggs, juice , fruits and vegetables, as well as nutritional information and breastfeeding promotion and support. (English & Spanish)

Safe Kids Cape Fear Child Passenger Safety Program: Aims to educate and instruct families on the proper use and installation of child restraints through Permanent Checking Stations and the Child Passenger Safety Diversion Program. You can participate today in an online child passenger safety class designed for parents, caregivers and community partners to take on their own. The class is taught by a Child Passenger Safety Technician and covers every car seat stage as your child graduates from a rear-facing seat to when they can wear an adult seat belt.
Permanent Checking Stations: New Hanover County Health & Human Services is 
one of several Permanent Checking Stations in the area where parents/caregivers can receive information about child passenger safety from nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and have their child restraints and seat belts checked for proper use and installation. Child Passenger Safety Diversion Program: This is an educational program offered to drivers who have received a ticket for not having a child properly restrained in their motor vehicle.

To be eligible for citation dismissal, the individual that was cited (driver) will attend the class where they will receive one-on-one education from a nationally certified technician and more about North Carolina child passenger safety law.
The driver that received the citation must be who schedules and attends the class prior to court date.
One the day of the appointment please bring:
- The child and the appropriate car seat for the child
- Citation
- Drivers License
After class, the technician issues a certificate for the driver to present to the District Attorney’s Office on the court date for dismissal of the citation and a waving of fines. This is a one-time opportunity for the driver.

Car Seat Distribution Program
The primary goal of this program is to educate and instruct families on the proper use/installation of child restraints. This is not an emergency resource.
To be eligible, guardian must be currently enrolled in Care Management for High Risk Children (CMHRC), Care Management for High Risk Pregnancy (CMHRP), or WIC program(s).
- CMHRC, CMHRP, or WIC program will need to complete and submit a referral on behalf of the client.
- Guardian will be contacted after referral is received to schedule an appointment for educational installation.
- Guardian must have full custody of child. *Foster parents or other family members are not eligible.
During the appointment:
- Guardian will receive hands on education to ensure the car seat is appropriate for the child and properly installed in the vehicle.
- Guardian must provide a vehicle for educational installation.
- Child receiving the seat must attend appointment. Unborn children are the exception.
- If the current car seat at appointment is expired, defective, has been involved in an accident, the child restraint will not be given back to the family due to safety reasons.
