Mosquito Spray Methods

Help prevent mosquitoes by removing standing water sources like plastic swimming pools, toys, tires, buckets, flowerpot bases, watering cans, pet dishes, boats, and cargo trailers. It may also be necessary to use larvicide (available at most hardware stores) to treat areas such as ornamental ponds (without fish), low lying or marshy areas, rainwater cisterns, retention and catch basins, and roadside ditches. By request, Vector Control provides education and evaluates areas for larviciding, adulticiding and source reduction control measures.

March to November, we identify mosquitoes caught throughout New Hanover County using Center for Disease Control (CDC) light traps and June to November we send mosquitoes to NC State Lab of Public Health to be tested for diseases including West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Based on requests and surveillance, we attempt to control the mosquito population through larviciding mosquito breeding areas and adulticiding via spray trucks between 6pm and 12am when levels reach a public health threat or become a nuisance.

Even though pesticide use has come a long way in posing minimal risk to humans, pets, wildlife, and the environment when applied according to the label, individuals should not run through, stand, or play in the spray. When you see our trucks spraying, we ask that you please go inside for about 30 minutes with the windows closed and any air conditioning unit(s) turned off. Our drivers are also instructed to stop spraying if people are by the road. We currently use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered Permanone 30-30 for adulticiding which uses the same active ingredient as topical scabies and head lice prescription medications. The pesticide droplets also degrade rapidly leaving little or no residue as we use ULV (ultra-low volume) sprayers with a range of roughly 300 feet. Our pesticides are labeled for public health or vector control in residential and recreational settings and are used at minimum application rates.
